Another Way of Living, Inc. Directors

Reverend, Cindy Yamamoto

Director of Spiritual Education

Cindy earned her Bachelors of Education degree in 2001 and served as an educator in the public and private sector for several years. Cindy extended her learning by taking classes to become a certified life coach in 2005 and has continued to coach people to help them attain their life goals to this present date. In 2007 she added Certified Career Coach to her credentials and began working in the nonprofit world for the Detroit Healthcare Career Center. While there, she taught life skills to people returning to school and developed and coordinated a program that served as a prerequisite for those interested in becoming skilled caretakers in the nursing profession.

In 2009 she joined the career development team at Focus Hope, a nonprofit organization in Detroit that helped people to come together in the community to overcome racism and inequality. During her 3 ½ years there, Cindy coached, mentored, and taught workshops and classes that helped students to develop the necessary life and career skills to reenter the workforce in the fields of healthcare, machining, information technology, and weatherization. For the past six years, she has had a contract with the YMCA of Greater Detroit coaching and leading workshops for families living just above the poverty level.  Though she still does private coaching, Cindy’s experience in these three nonprofit organizations has brought her the greatest satisfaction, not to mention a plethora of success stories that have resulted from them. Additionally Cindy has hosted educational workshops and seminars on important life enhancing, spiritual, and empowering topics for community, church, school, and business groups.

Noting that many of her clients lacked basic financial skills, Cindy added to her services by studying insurance and finance, which resulted in obtaining and maintaining both insurance and securities licenses. She shares her knowledge to coach her clients in the development of budgets and financial goals to build a stronger future.

In 2004 Cindy became actively involved with the Unity Church and has served many roles such as workshop presenter, meditation leader, youth sponsor, greeter, and prayer chaplain. In 2007 she began leading Sunday services as a guest speaker. By 2016 she was traveling nationally to many Unity churches to regularly perform Sunday services and workshops. In 2017 she became certified by the state of Michigan as an ordained minister to perform marriages. That same year Cindy decided to begin training with Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute to become a licensed and ordained Unity Minister. In June of 2020, Cindy completed her Masters of Divinity degree and officially became an Ordained Unity Minister. Cindy currently serves as the senior minister for Unity Church of Livonia, Michigan.

Ken Yamamoto

Director of Operations

Ken Yamamoto has been a licensed builder for the state of Michigan for over 30 years. Ken has also been an entrepreneur and business owner for most of his career and has owned and operated several property management, construction, and renovation businesses renovating and building countless residential and commercial, conventional style housing structures. Ken has always had an interest and desire to specialize in alternative super energy-efficient housing structures and now plans to focus his career on the latest energy-efficient building technologies and designs.

Ken is passionate about alternative energy, energy-efficient construction, and serving his community. He has volunteered his services to many non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Washtenaw County Area on Aging, and the Washtenaw County Senior Leaders. He also served the role of Director for the area’s oldest and most prominent senior services networking group. Though he has served his community through many activities, his most enjoyable contribution was to use his construction skills to help build a geodesic dome to house a young family in Milan, Michigan.

In 1993 Mr. Yamamoto started his first business, Hexadome ® of Michigan, Inc., to enhance residential geodesic dome designs and construction methods. This vision expanded to include other types of energy-efficient and sustainable construction techniques such as earth-bag, straw-bale, aircrete, and most recently, insulative infused cement for monolithic dome construction. In 2019 Ken and his wife Cindy Yamamoto established Another Way of Living, Inc. (AWOL) as a 501c3, non-profit educational organization to share Ken’s knowledge of these construction techniques and to use their facilities for spiritual and educational retreats.

Ken also believes in energy independence and has been involved with the solar and wind energy industry for many years. Combining clean, sustainable energy sources to power the needs of AWOL’s building structures and continually making design improvements is one of his goals. His intent for AWOL is to facilitate an educational campus where people can experience hands-on energy generation and sustainable building systems.
